N   When you see someone whose hair has gone Lamentations white and whose crown gapes with emptiness where the ruby ought to be, offer a prayer of thanks. This is the necrotic crown, a testament to survival. Though the rotting ruby has been sliced out, the bearer refuses to fill the setting with colored glass, as if to proclaim, I have sojourned between the lands of the living and the dead—I have endured, I have returned, and I wanted you to know.
