No-Womb Woman
continued

A little while ago, I said something.

I said I didn't want her giving away our baby.

        A mistake.

Now she sits on the stool, a towel between her legs, and she is puffing. Krissie is on the floor at her feet, saying, “It's okay, Mommy.”

My dad stands by the garage door, wiping his greasy hands. “Everything's all right” he says. “In a few days this will all be a memory.”

I look at my mom, at the ball that is her belly, carrying what seems to be but isn't my brother.

Then I press my face against her stomach and whisper—“Sissy's here.”
