Madge McGettigan nods and turns to go back to the cottage and as she moves away he slips the usual envelope in to her hand. He returns quickly to his car and it is only when she hears the noise as he pulls away that she realises she hasn't given him his eggs.
        She hesitates. She is reluctant to have anything to do with police, who shot Paudie, and for whom Madge McGettigan has a visceral hatred and fear. She is still undecided until she looks out and sees the poor man lying on his back on the ground. She dials 999.
