CHAPTER 2
continued

'No. We don't go away much. We like it here at the cottage. That suits us fine.'
'I think it's about time you took Mary away someplace else for a change.'
Eamon says nothing as Ignatius Davin makes himself a fresh mug of tea. He opens a cupboard where he selects a packet of biscuits. Eamon waits until Davin sits down.
'Why Mary and me? We've been out of operational work for years. I'm pushing sixty.'
'It is because you've been out of sight for years that you are the ideal choice, Eamon,' Davin slurps from his tea mug. He crams a biscuit in his mouth. 'Let's face it, you're so far below the radar, you are all but forgotten. Same with Mary. You don't know Flash Gordon, nor does Mary, and best of all he does not have an idea who you two are. That is what I need.'
Eamon is shaking. He hopes he is not showing just how scared he is.
'You'll go?' The question is rhetorical.
Eamon knows he does not have a choice. Once in never out. 'Where to?'
'You'll be briefed. What I need to know is that you'll do the job? Just go and take a peep at a few folk, confirm some things, that's all. A breeze really.' Davin takes another biscuit and chews as he continues his stare. The wind shakes the van, rain spatters on the roof.
Eamon nods. 'Okay, Iggy. Sure.' He stands up knowing the interview is over.
